Click here for a listing of businesses and boating destinations in this area.

The central part of the north shore is rich is boating destinations and facilities. Sierra Boat Company, in Carnelian Bay, and North Tahoe Marina, in Tahoe Vista, both are full-service marinas with fuel and other services. Sierra hosts a world-class collection of classic wooden runabouts, while North Tahoe is the lake's high-performance boating center.

Gar Wood's restaurant in Carnelian Bay is a good restaurant with the north shore's largest deck and best public pier. The pier can be used by visitors to other area businesses as well. Sunsets by the Lake is another fine restaurant, a short walk from North Tahoe Marina.

King's Beach is the largest town on the North Shore and is quite boater-friendly, with a large beach and easy access to many stores.

Incline Village includes the famous "millionaire's row" of lakefront houses, which is rapidly becoming "billionaire's row." Crusing by these houses is the main boating activity here for non-residents; there is no public docking, and the beach and launch ramp are open to residents only.

Stateline point at the east edge of the bay offers beautiful rocky scenery but no public boating facilities.

Click here for a listing of businesses and boating destinations in this area.

This is the most undeveloped part of the lake and has the most beautiful beaches. It is unsurpassed as a lunch destination. Care must be taken, however, due to scattered rocks near the shore. When the westerly wind is blowing, as it often is during the summer, the surf can get quite rough in the afternoon, and the trip back to the west or north shore can be very bouncy. It is best to head home at the first sign of increasing swell.

Sand Harbor is a very popular destination and hosts the Shakespeare concerts during August. It is easily visited by land as well as by boat, so it is generally very crowded.

Secret Harbor is a fairly long hike from the road, making it far less crowded. It is spectacularly beautiful, with water colors rivaling the Carribean. One of the Secret Harbor beaches is popular with the clothing-optional crowd.

Skunk Harbor is a small cove that doesn't have much of a beach but is beautiful.

The south shore is the lake's most heavily populated area. Nevertheless, the western end of the shore, dominated by Camp Richardson, maintains much of the old Tahoe flavor. Camp Richardson provides cabins, camp sites, a restaurant, a pier, and boat rentals.

Tahoe Keys has two sections, with separate entrances. To the west is a huge development of waterfront homes and apartments. Just to the east is the entrance to the lake's largest marina, the Tahoe Keys Marina, which provides all services.

At the east end of the south shore is the city of South Lake Tahoe, the largest city on the lake and adjacent to the gambling mecca at Stateline (just into Nevada). The city provides a launch ramp, and there are several piers and a few waterfront restaurants. Overall, however, this is a land-oriented part of the lake, and most boaters would do best elsewhere.

Tahoe Keys Marina is the largest marina on the lake. The narrow entrance is at the center of this photo; follow the pairs of buoys to the entrance, as this part of the lake is quite shallow close to the shore. Note that the Tahoe Keys housing development has a separate entrance to the west (past the right edge of this photo); the two do not connect.

The marina is home to the Fresh Ketch restaurant, a small chandlery, and boat sales and service operations, as well as a large collection of powerboats. It is the only marina on the lake that operates year-round.
